If you want to make a compelling case against the cynicism of our time, consider Afrofuturism — the utopian philosophy and cultural movement. It was on full, gorgeous display in the recent blockbuster movie, “Black Panther” — with the vision of Wakanda, a technologically advanced black civilization of wealth and power, rich in science, art and history. It was breathtaking, right? 

Artist and activist Ingrid La Fleur says it’s not just a dream. She recently ran for mayor of Detroit as the Afrofuturist Party candidate. She told Haleema Shah that Afrofuturism is both cosmic and practical.
