In many parts of Detroit, there are blighted, abandoned patches of land. Timothy Paule and Nicole Lindsey were disturbed to see what was happening to their native city. But instead of looking the other way, the couple started buying up vacant lots — the first, a 3,500 square foot parcel for $340 — and building bee hives on the property.

Paule and Lindsey, who had been afraid of bees, discovered beekeeping after Paule used raw honey to cure a cough he just couldn’t kick.
