Allan Kellehear

Public Health Sociologist

Allan Kellehear, PhD, is Professor of Community Health, School of Health and Education, Middlesex University. He was formerly Professor of Palliative Care at LaTrobe University in Australia (1998 – 2006), Professor of Sociology at the University of Bath in England (2006 – 2011), and Professor in the Department of Community Health & Epidemiology at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia, Canada (2011-2013). During these times he was also the 2003-04 Visiting Professor of Australian Studies at the University of Tokyo in Japan, and then the 2009 William J. Clinton Distinguished Lecturer at the William J. Clinton Presidential Center and Clinton School of Public Service at the University of Arkansas, USA. He is an Academician of the Academy of Social Sciences in the United Kingdom.

Dr. Allan Kellehear has published nine books and over one-hundred scholarly articles. His books include A Social History of Dying and The Study of Dying: From Autonomy to Transformation, which brings together research from several disciplines on what we know about dying, and shows how cultural influences, social circumstances and personal choice shape the experience. Dr. Kellehear was the editor for ten other books, and he is the co-editor of the international journal Morality.
